EDP Reflections

(Pre-EDP)

I am looking forward to starting my EDP, I will be working with Ms. Neely in Hampton at Cooper Elementary during a Saturday morning STEM camp. For my first lesson, I will start with a familiar lesson plan that my group and I used at the YMCA in Hampton. I am nervous because all the different groups will have a 45 minute rotation schedule during the Saturday camp, the time seems like a longtime. I am just hoping that the activity lasts the entire time for all the groups. I do not want the kids to become bored during our activity. I have also never been to Cooper Elementary, so I really don’t know how the school is set up. I am really looking forward to making mistakes and learning from them!

The Saturday STEM camp was fun! I was thinking that 45 minutes was too long; it turned out to be not enough time. The rotations flew by each time, I was shocked. We were all very nervous about starting the activity, but once we started, it all came naturally. The only problem that we experienced was, we changed our supplies. This change led to some of the cars not being able to move because the wheels could not freely turn because of our materials. Overall, we felt good about our activity. We can wait to do this this again!

For the second EDP activity, we were all on our own. We had to teach the scientific method to 4, 5, and 6th graders. I choose a bubble gum experiment. It was a different experience being on my own this time, but I am up to the challenge. The question I want the kids to answer is: Which brand of bubble will produce the biggest bubble? I am familiar with the school this time and I plan on showing a fun video that has a rap song about the scientific method. If there is time we will have a bubble blowing contest. At the end, I will assist the students in making a display board where they will break down our bubble gum lesson into the steps of the scientific method.

When the students came in, I had them to meet me at the promethean board so they could view the scientific method rap song. They enjoyed it so much that we watched it twice. Next, we moved into a SpongeBob themed scientific method worksheet, we read it aloud and filled in the blanks together. They really enjoyed the SpongeBob worksheet because they could relate to watching the actual show. Next, the experiment was explained and we passed out materials. The fact that chewing gum was involved excited the kids. We made it through the experiment, recorded our individual results, and last we made our Scientific method display board. We had more time with the kids this time and I still felt like I needed to have a little more time. Time management is definitely my problem! The kids were great and I cannot wait to do this again!
